今回は韻に重点を置いて訳してみました。

やはり、難しい

元の歌詞の良さをうまく表現できているか心配です。

洋楽の和訳は洋楽の良さを英語をあまり理解できない人に伝えたり、

また、そこから英語の学習のきっかけとなることを願って執筆しているが、

和訳するとどうしても違和感がある部分が出てくる。

このような恋の歌も、英語で聞く分にはいいが、

日本語にするとどうも気恥ずかしさをかんじてしまう。

和訳をし終えた後に気づいたのだが、

英語のお話。

歌詞に出てきた英語で気になったとこを記していきたい思う。

歌詞中に

I always see you reaching and catching the stars.

とたびたび、出てくるが、

このような形は受験英語では

①知覚動詞（see, look at, observe, etc)＋Ving

[Ving しているところを知覚動詞する］

と訳すのがセオリーである。

そして、これと一緒に学ぶのが

②知覚動詞＋Ving

である。

よく、①と②に関しての違いの説明で

①はVしている一瞬を知覚している

に対し

②はVしている一部始終を知覚した

と説明されるが、これについて考察したい。

僕は、この説明が間違いだとは思わないが、少し本質を外しているように思う。

始めに僕なりの説明を示しておきたい。

①はVが完了していない

②はV が完了した

一応、自分の説の裏を取るために権威あるCambridge Dictionary でこの件について調べてみた。下記を参照されたい。

①については

The action was in progress, happening but not completed

と書かれてある。

を例に考えてみよう。

従来の考えでは

私は君が星に手を伸ばし、捕まえようとしている一部をいつも見ている

となる。

しかし、僕の意見ではこの文で大切なのは一部か全部ではない。

完了したか、完了してないかだ。

僕の解釈では上の例は次のように訳せる

私は君が星に手を伸ばし、捕まえようとしてる（まだ完了していない）様子をいつも見ている。

あんまり大差がないと思われただろう。

しかし、この感覚は英語において大切だと思う。

例えば、

I always see you reach and catch with the star.

はありえないのだ。

なぜなら、人は星をつかむことができないからだ。

つまり、reach とcatch という動作は完了できない。

ここで少し発展させたい。

このVingの完了していないという感覚は知覚動詞と共に使われ時に限ったことではない。

Vingを使った進行形についても同じ感覚があると思う。

進行形において、

I am eating breakfast.

という文では、eat という動作はまだ完了していない。

（余談になるが、実は進行形はonが省略されて今の形になったらしい）

英語の表現

つぎに面白い歌詞中の英語のイディオムを紹介したい

この箇所に二つのイディオムがある

一つ目は

hang on (one's) sleeve

To be totally reliant on someone else.

You're 30 years old, so stop hanging on your mother's sleeve and get a job already!

二つ目は

最後に

洋楽の訳し方にはいろいろな方法があると思うが、

ここまで元の歌詞で韻を踏まれると訳に反映せずにはいられない
